This section will provide the essential elements of project management including prioritizing projects, developing a project charter, budgeting and resources, the project plan, monitoring and reporting, leading with influence, controlling budgets and schedules, dealing with the unexpected.

Learning Objectives:  

  • Understand how to prioritize multiple project proposals to focus limited resources.
  • Identify the key elements of a project outline including goals, scope, resources and personnel
  • Understand the roles of the project manager and executive sponsor
  • Identify the key elements of the project plan and budget
  • Understand how to monitor the plan and budget and to prepare reports for management review
  • Understand methods of controlling budgets and schedules, and dealing with the unexpected
  • Understand basic concepts of leading with influence
  • Understand the importance of regularly scheduled project review meetings

General Course Outline:

 A. Setting the Stage for Success

  • Prioritizing multiple projects –where do we start?
  • The Executive Sponsor
  • Selecting the project manager
  • Outlining the project definition
  • The detailed project plan and budget

Participants will learn and practice with a prioritization tool, identify the attributes of the ideal project manager and will learn how to complete a project charter, project plan and budget. Templates for the prioritization tool, charter, plan and budget will be provided.

B.  Managing the Plan

  • Four key objectives of every project
  • Scope-creep; what it is and how to avoid it
  • Monitoring the schedule and budget
  • When things go wrong – countermeasures
  • Managing with influence and escalating problems for resolution

Participants will learn to monitor and maintain the project plan and budget.The various forms of leadership influence will be discussed by the group and a process for cutting through red tape and breaking down organizational resistance will be explained.

C. Reports and Reviews

  • Project reports
  • The project review meeting
  • The post-project review

Participants will learn to prepare project status reports and project forecasts. The purpose and importance of project review meetings and the post-project review will be discussed. Report templates will be provided.
