Creating Your Future

This is a quick hands-on way to introduce your agency to issues such as, “what are you trying to achieve” and “are you a successful agency?  This is also a useful way to gain a basic understanding of strategic planning and operations planning for board members, District Attorneys, Chief Probation Officers, VSA Executive Directors plus staff and volunteers. This training also can be used as a hands-on way to introduce staff and volunteers to establishing and measuring program expectations.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN - you will have opportunities to:

1.    Consider the challenges of measuring program success (the intermediate and advanced levels offer opportunities to discuss and reflect upon these challenges with colleagues and agency members)

2.    Review basic concepts of strategic and operational planning (the intermediate and advanced levels offer opportunities to more thoroughly review and analyze these challenges with colleagues and agency members)

3.    Apply an example of a program measurement format (the intermediate and advanced levels offer opportunities to more thoroughly apply and examine these challenges with colleagues and agency members)

After publishing Good to Great, Jim Collins heard from so many government non-profit managers that he decided to write an extra chapter that shows how the principles from Good to Great relate to the social sector.  He finds that the secret of high performance in government is not to run government like a business, but rather to focus on excellence in a disciplined way.  Numerous useful lessons for public managers are included. For example, for recruiting the right people for your agency – “getting the right people on the bus” – it is suggested that directors use probationary periods for new organization members as a true test of and to see who really can advance the agency towards its mission.
